Happy Halloween...a little late!

Greetings from a now chilly desert!! We have been spoiled with such beautiful weather until two days ago. Now it is windy, raining, and cold. It is suppose to freeze tonight. I am not complaining as this is much more tolerable than the dang heat!!!

We had a great Halloween full of parties, trick or treating and our favorite carving pumpkins!! The girls did their own pumpkins this year, from designing the face to cutting. I love that they are able to enjoy more of the fun but at the same time it makes me miss my little girls. It seems with each little milestone I ask someone "didn't we just get them?". Time certainly doesn't stand still!! The girls were Alvin and the Chipmunks and loved it!! I dressed up this year as Mimi Bobeck from the Drew Carey show. It was fun!!

Melody received a COBRA kid award for being the most improved student! She had a little bit of a hard time adjusting to a new school and teacher so the first month was a little shakey!! We are so proud of her for turning it around and is now doing great!

In all seriousness, because I am so serious, I can't believe how big these girls are! I have a 3rd Grader, A THIRD GRADER!!!!

The official "Please Mom" photo!! I already warned them that this will happen until their Senior year so get used to it!

Aunt Peggy was kind enough to help me out, since Erik was working out of town for the day, by taking Melody to her school. Mel was a little intimidated but once her teacher started taking them in she was fine. Thanks Aunt Peggy for helping us and trekking all the way back to the car for the forgotten lunch box!

Priscilla found her dot and said "see ya!" She is in 2nd grade now and this is old hat!! She didn't want me to stay to see her off so I sulked my way to the 1st grade side. I snuck this picture in by having a friend of hers call her name!

Little miss didn't help my ego much either. She informed me that she didn't need me to stay and also that she didn't want any more pictures taken! After promising I would leave her alone she let me take "just one"!! Hilarious, my girls never say to me no pictures!! I am happy that they are so comfortable at school and LOVE their teachers!! It is going to be a great year!!!

The girls participated in the annual Cardboard Boat Races help at the city pool. It is not as easy as you would think...not only is your vessel made of cardboard but they must hold a noodle between their legs as they kick their way down the lane, while pushing their boat with a kick board! It makes me tired just writing about it!!

Before the races started Melody won one of the raffle prizes...5 free blizzards from Dairy Queen!!

Serenity...now most of you know she isn't very fond of the water. She tolerates swimming lessons because the rule in our house is you have to know how to swim. Erik and I were a little worried that her race was going to be a total wreck but we were wrong! Serenity kept telling us she was going to do it and by golly she did! She came in DEAD last by about 5 minutes but she kicked the entire length of the pool, for the very first time, with her swim teachers, and the crowd, cheering her on!!

Erik had a bad ingrown toenail. He let it bother him for almost a week until I finally made him call my dad. Much to his dismay, I had to document it all!!

This was the coolest part...dad took a blunt end of some tool and just poked it under the nail, moved it from side to side and pulled off the nail with a little gauze! Fascinating!!!

It's a World of Laughter!

We made our annual family trek to Disneyland this last week. It is always a great, even though exhausting, time and this trip was no exception!

To pass the time while making the long drive, Peg, her girls, Erik and I decided to play mobile eye spy. This was my fourth or fifth guess and a plea for more paper...which was soon handed to me via window transfer at 65 mph!!

Priscilla was oblivious to such shenanigans as she played on her leapster!!

Upon entering our hotel room we were greeted by a fabulous night sky! Thank goodness I found the switch to turn OFF the black light!!

How fitting that this picture hung above the girls bed!!

This was Erik's idea of jazzing up the place!!

Morning brought great excitement as we prepared to head over to the park. Serenity passed the time by playing hide and seek.

I am falling in love with this young lad!

Almost everyday he comes running over to greet me with "my mom said I could come to your house" even when I know he hasn't even asked! I usually reply in the affirmative, who wouldn't with those beautiful blue eyes of his. Upon entering the house his first priority is to head to the drawer that holds Serenity's Thomas the Train ABC Computer then plops on the couch to play. Lately though he asks "will you play Mario Kart with me? I be big Mario." How can I deny?

When he is ready he informs me he is ready for a snack and a drink but "not milk, I want water" from the machine of course! The water from the neighbors machine always tastes better than the water from your fridge too, admit it!

And today he totally crushed my heart when he told me he wanted to play Mario Kart with Erik. Alright, not totally crushed because I know my muffins are way better than Erik's!!

We took the girls to see the Christmas lights at the Ethel M Chocolate Factory and there was action in the kitchen this time!! Last year, our first time taking them, there was nothin going on!!

I Wanna Hippopotamus For Christmas!

Our Holiday season went by so fast!! Seems like we just ate Turkey! We have enjoyed our time together as a family and are looking forward to a great new year. One of our traditions is to visit the lights in the Cactus Garden at Ethel M. Of course we have to take the tour in hopes of them making something and this year we had a little teaser! The girls are just dying to see the place in action, we will have to take them one time during the day just to see the bees buzzing!

We did go to the Electric Christmas parade and had a great time. We got to see Caitlin in the band and our friends Gavin and Avery on their respective floats! It is so much fun to have our family and good friends around to watch the parade with. A great night of laughter, love and hot chocolate!!

Christmas Eve was spent at my moms, as usual. We had a great night. Peg seems to have all the pictures on her camera from the evening!! After a little wandering around town to look at Christmas lights we headed home to prepare for the big guy!

ALMOST Lost 'Em...

We have embarked on our journey to Northern Idaho and Washington for a visit with Erik's parents and best friend.

We were beyond thrilled to be greeted by rain in Cedar City

followed by this gorgeous rainbow.

Saturday brought us to "Hannah Montana"! For those of you who aren't in the know, this is what the girls started calling Montana after my parents bought their property up in Cascade so we now call it that as well! The girls were beyond thrilled when Erik announced that we were in Montana, immediately they asked about going to Mamoo and Poppops. After learning that we wouldn't be meeting up with them they asked if we would see any bears like Aunt Peggy saw when she went to visit Mamoo and Poppop. Erik decided to take them on a bear hunt when we stopped for a little stretch. It was the cutest thing!!

The Clark River runs along Interstate 90 in Montana into Idaho and further. It is a beautiful sight to follow and Erik and I have joked for years that our good friends, The Clarks, are lucky to have such a beautiful river named after them! Well today Erik decided that one of our stretches should include a spot that would get us up close and personal with the river, if he only knew! When we parked Priscilla didn't want to get out so we let her stay in since we were parked right at the STEEP bank. I took a few pictures, of course...

After this picture is when I rethought Erik's suggestion! Erik climbed half way down the steep embankment and waited their for Melody then he carried her the rest of the way, dunked her feet in the water and they started looking at whatever was down there. Serenity and I were at the top with our backs to the car looking at the pretty yellow flowers etc. when I turn back around Priscilla is basically sliding down the embankment in her flip flops because she didn't realize how steep it was. All I could do was scream for Erik as I am picturing her rolling into the river. He turns just as she hits a clump of tall grass and thankfully falls backwards onto her bum. Serenity is screaming Priscilla, through tears, because she can't see her in the tall grass, I scoop her up and calm her with the truth that it is all ok. Erik scoops up Priscilla and Melody who got tipped over into the mud by Priscilla. If Priscilla had fallen forward both she and Melody would have ended up in the river!

The girls have taken to swimming better than I ever expected!

Every morning they ask "Do we have swim today?" They are doing wonderful in their classes. Since my last post Melody is now in level II and doing excellent. The other two are still in level I but we have been told that Priscilla will move to level II next session. She was very close at the end of last session but better to keep her in level I and have it down than move her to early. Serenity is chugging along. She is much more comfortable in the water than she was a month ago and for those that know her that is huge!

The girls and I met some friends down at the park for the annual parade and park festivities. It is still weird to be down at the park with out the whole family like when I was growing up but I am making due! It will be really nice when Erik can join us!!

Since the 4th fell on a Sunday Boulder held the parade and park festivities on Saturday and the fireworks on Sunday. Sunday night we went over to Peg's and watched fireworks with her, Bug and Nan. Afterward we went over to Lee's and lit our own fireworks. It was a great night!!

The New Dolphin show "Blue Horizons" is so much better than the old show! The girls loved that there was a princess!! They laughed and laughed when the big pilot whales soaked those silly enough to sit in the soak zone.

River Monsters!! Not really what they call it but if youhave ever seen that TV show this is exactly what was here. Erik was in heaven and the girls would spot a fish and say that is a such and such fish from dads show! My favorite in this exhibit was the poisonous tree frogs, so bright and beautiful!

Next stop was the Sesame Street 4-D show. It was fun and Serenity lasted the whole show, unlike her first trip to Bugs Life!

Sesame Street Bay of Play you are a godsend!! This is the kid area that also includes a bounce house, climbing ropes and a little splash area. There is even an area with big foam blocks for little tikes!

Erik made us visit these hee bee gee bee's too! They snake their bodies backwards into the holes in the rocks and wait for their prey!

We took the girls on this SOAKING WET adventure. We thought for sure we would have two HYSTERICALLY screaming kids by the first turn but to our suprise they did great, not that they want to do it again though!!

You can see how wet Serenity is, Priscilla leaned forward so her back is soaked, Melody's dark shorts hide how soaked she is!! What fun!!

The girls, yes us too, loved the Shamu show. All we have heard from the time we have left is the Shamu splash chant!

This is how I felt after day two, but I would do it all again today if we could! The girls loved it and seeing their faces and hearing their laughs is what makes it.

Taking The Plunge

The girls started swimming lessons and we are all thrilled!! As most of you know Serenity hasn't been to keen about getting in the water. We knew she was going to be taking lessons and were kind of dreading it so a dear friend, who teaches lessons, offered to take her a few times and see if she could help her get a little comfortable. IT WORKED!!!! We can't thank Staci enough! Melody was almost swimming at the end of last year but we had to start her in level one. Priscilla was the unknown, she didn't freak in the water like Serenity but didn't seem to care for it, she loves it! We are excited to see their progress!!

My cousin Christopher dropped in for a little visit. We haven't "seen" him in over 20 years! It was wonderful to finally "meet" his wife Kimberly. WOW!! I can't believe that the preschool years are over! Serenity joined her classmates for a little graduation ceremony. It is so cute to watch these little cuties!

This is the cutest part of the whole ceremony, seriously. The graduates are told to walk to the blue X and stand their while their future careers are read. They took this standing on the X VERY serious as most wouldn't look up to the crowd! The teachers do not edit what the kids say. Serenity said she wants to be a teacher when she grows up! One little girl said she wanted to be an ice cream truck driver and an acrobat, SO precious!!

Our favorite Amanda participated in the Miss BC pageant one last time this month. Although she didn't win she scored bonus points for her talent and won scholarship money for the best essay!! Melody had a fun birthday party with her friends and family at the bowling alley. Everyone had a great time, including the uh em, big "kids"! I waited and waited for the T-Birds to show up so we could dance in the lanes but they stood me up!! (Only you will get that Hoop!!)

Amanda Turns 18

Amanda & Erik's birthdays are one day after the other, this year due to crazy circumstances Amanda was kind enough to share her big turning 18 burthday with Erik, he was honored believe me!

Amanda was beyond thrilled with a sewing machine from her mom. She has been wanting one of her own for several years now. Mamoo & Poppop and our family rounded out the sewing theme with accessories, cases, patterns and notions!

The traditional cake picking applies to Peg's girls too. This time...ice cream cake made with ice cream sandwiches and cool whip.

Erik gets to pick his cake too, this year he asked for a triple layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. It isn't very pretty but not bad for my first attempt at a triple layer!

Since church doesn't start until 1:00 pm, don't get me started on that one, we had time to hunt easter eggs before church this year! It was fun that the girls haven't caught on to the fact that dad is the one who hides the eggs, even when we have early church and don't hunt them until AFTER church! Thanks girls for letting mom believe in the magic of childhood for a while longer!!

It is a tradition at Andrew J Mitchell Elementary to have the Kindergarten classes make Easter bonnets and parade through the school. It is a crowd pleaser, let me tell you!

Fun At Tata J's Barn

My good friend Jamie, aka Tata J, has a very nice area down at the corrals, she had a menagerie of animals and recently baby goats were born so of course we went down to visit those cute little kids!

We were greeted by this handsome man, he actually lives at the neighbors but how could he not be photographed?!!

First stop...the goat pen!! Mama goat was so good to us, she let us play and hold her babies with no problems. She was probably glad someone else had come to entertain the wild and crazy kids for a little while!! Those little guys are jumping, climbing fools!!

Next up was a ride on Shadow girl. What a sweet gentle mare, the girls didn't want to get off.

Next up was a little tag team goat milking. Poor mama goat had a problem with one teat filling up to much that the babies couldn't latch on. See how the baby is trying to climb onto Erik as he holds onto mams horns?!! Both babies kept jumping on his or Jamie's back as they milked, it was funny!!

Finally Five

Our little miss turned five and I am still wondering what happened to that barely walking, two toothed, curly haired, "no" speaking little girl we brought home went!! I love the little lady she has become but I miss what little bit of "baby" stage we were able to experience with her!

Peg and her girls joined our family for Family Home Evening tonight and we started a new tradition...Egging!! NO not that type of egging! We filled some plastic eggs with goodies, scattered them in the yard and left an empty basket for them to gather their eggs in!! It is hard to say who enjoyed this activity more...those under the age of 8 or those over the age of 15!!! One thing we do know is that it made us feel so good to spread a little eggy cheer!!

Here is the latest from Thompson Rehabilitation Center!!

It is Sun night. He had a good day today. Still has times of confusion, usually when he is tired. He still experiences some short term memory loss. His coordination is improving some. He is able to read and seems to comprehend early in the day, but again when he is tired, the comprehension is usually absent. He is sleeping better, and his appetite has improved. Though his sense of taste seems altered. He is finding many things sour that he didn't before. I guess I need not bore you with the details. But I find it facinating how one small lesion on the brain can cause such a wide variety of changes in behavior. He is conversing better, and dialed the phone independently for the first time yesterday. Math is difficult. I don't know if he recognizes denominations of money. One of his friends called and invited him to a Gun show on Sat. He declined and then later in the day asked me to take him. I took the wheelchair, so he didnt' have to walk. He enjoyed himself for a couple of hours. He had trouble paying for purchases, and when we got home, he said "My brain just wasn't working right today." I know he is terribly frustrated and feel like he has lost control of his life. I keep telling him the Dr.'s say he will recover completely. He hates the fact that he cannot drive yet and tells me what a rotten driver I am. I just reassure him that when the Dr. says it is okay, I will give him back the car keys. The location of the lesion has caused him to lose some of his inhibitions, so he is blatantly and brutally blunt. I worry that he will hurt peoples feelings. Please understand that this is part of his illness. He also gets agitated easily. Sometimes it is unpredictable, and takes a bit of time to calm him down. That's why I don't feel comfortable leaving him yet. Except for church when Shawna is here. I have Ashley and Amanda who are willing to run errands for me. It is such a help.

Thank you all for the love and prayers and emotional support. I can't imagine experiencing this without the blessings of the gospel in our lives. We know the Lord loves us and knows our fears and pain. I am so grateful that I had my knees replaced last year and am able to physically care for Doug. He is such a dear man, and it breaks my heart to see him this way. He does have a sense of humor most of the time, which helps tremendously. Keep up the prayers, we can use all the help we can get. Someday we will know what we were supposed to learn from this experience.

On a rare occasion I have the privilege of picking Serenity up from Tiny Tots. Usually that honor is all Sister Clarks, aka Anneliese or the best neighbor EVER, because I drive the going to school bus!!

Today we had no pressing engagements after school so the girls were able to play in the grass in front of the school. This is a cherished pastime for current and former Tiny Tot students. Whether it is before or after school, windy and cold, or hot and humid you will find them running around in the grass or playing chase around the big tree.

Special Birthday Visitor!!

We really had reason to celebrate Priscilla's 6th, yes SIXTH, birthday. Poppop, aka dad or Doug, made a suprise visit. As we all know he has been home for a few weeks but hasn't really felt like being social we will say! The girls were beyond thrilled to see him walk through the door!!

In keeping with tradition the birthday girl gets to pick the menu for dinner, P picked corn dogs and macaroni and cheese.

After dinner presents were opened with the "big" present being a new bike!

In keeping with our other tradition, the birthday girl gets to pick what kind of cake. Now Priscilla is a girl that knows what she likes and it must be just so, so you can imagine my eyes when she informed me that she wanted a white and chocolate cake, chocolate frosting with red letters, and flower and heart sprinkles!! Only my P!!! I threw on the pink hearts hoping it would pass inspection and thankfully it did!!

Monsters and Juice!

After Serenity and I picked Priscilla up from school today, we paid a visit to our most favorite Poppop in the "whole wide world" and we are happy to report that he is doing GREAT!!!

His walking is much improved and can do it without the walker. He also got himself dressed and undressed the last two days!! Amazing how something so little has become so huge. Just goes to show what we take for granted on a daily basis. The girls were more than thrilled when he told them to climb up on his bed with him. They snuggled in and as soon as he knew they were comfy he tickled them and growled like a monster and sent them screaming to the other room! They all loved it!! It was wonderful to see that. They even teased him about drinking his juice, which is a long running joke with them. It was a great visit!!!

Each Kindergartener has the oppotunity to make their favorite book character, hide it in a HUGE envelope and write three clues and have their classmates try and guess what character they made. Priscilla chose "The Cat In The Hat" she giggles and giggles at all the mischief her causes. I am proud to say that there was very minimal help from me on this project.

I am sorry that the updating is so SLOW...if we only had control of this situation!!

Dad is chugging along! We have heard from the neurologist that she doesn't see any reason that all the issues with the memory will not resolve themselves once all the infection is gone and the brain heals. Now that is where we wait and wait and wait some more!! There hasn't been any regression so we think all is headed in a good direction.

He, all of us actually, is glad to be home. He spends most days hanging out on a bed in the family room. His walking is getting better, even though sometimes it is just out of spite!

We thank you all for the continued prayers and well wishes.

He is still having memory and walking issues. He is still on the antibiotics and will be for weeks to come. Mom will administer those at home through his pic line. They did the angiogram catscan of his head, a catscan of his belly and pelvis to make sure everything is ok before sending him home. As long as those are clear he should be able to come home today, Tuesday.

Mom is trying to remain strong but could use a few prayers on her behalf.

We want to thank you all again for the many prayers and the fasting. We know it is helping!!

Late Friday Night....from mom

A quick note to let you know what is going on. Again I thank each and every one of you for the love, support and prayers on our behalf. We are going to have a family fast on Sun. the 14th and invite all who would like to join us. We know that the power of prayer and fasting is incredible. The Lord has blessed us beyond our ability to comprehend it just a few weeks ago. And now he is doing the same. '

Doug was started on some strong antibiotics for ear infections and Mastoiditis, (Mastoiditis is an infection of the temporal bone of the skull that is behind the ear which contains open, air-containing spaces. It is usually caused by untreated acute otitis media (middle ear infection) Becky looked this up for all us commoners!! ) and for the possibility of the small lesion found on MRI being an infection too. The Doctors are unclear whether this is a new infection, or if the abcessed tooth seeded some bacteria up into the brain and it is causing problems.

We are still unclear as to the cause of his memory loss, and confusion. But after 24 hours on antibiotics he is doing much better. His mind is clearer. Some of his motor skills are still a little slow. But whenever there is such an insult to the brain, it can take a alot of time for it to resolve itself. Sometimes it never does. Early in the day Doug is pretty clear, but as the day goes on, as he gets tired, his thought processes become more foggy. Even to the point of not remembering his own birthday when he is very tired.

Tonight for the first time he was able to use the nurse call light, the TV control, and answer the phone. The Dr.'s want to keep him hospitalized until Tues., and observe him. They do not want to take the chance on another relapse. Then send him home on IV antibiotics. We will pray for things to go as they plan.

Thursday Morning

Mom just called, around 10:45 am Dad went down to x-ray for a bone scan and a specialized MRI that will focus on the area of the growth. Dr. Sife, (again hang in there with me on the spellings!) the neurologist, is wanting to wait for a few more tests to be done before he does the biopsy. He said that there are several factors for this...

The growth is small, only about as big as a nickel but thinner than a dime. This makes getting a good piece to biopsy very difficult.
It is not in an easy place to get to.

Dr. Sife is not positive that this is the cause of the memory loss either. Yep, just when we thought we had a reason! The Dr. also recommends that he go home and come back for the tests. He is medically stable and mom is having to stay with him most of the time because he can't remember to ring his light for help. Mom doesn't know when they will release him but it has been suggested.

On a little side note, Amanda, Peggy's oldest daughter, will be moving in with mom to help. This will be a great blessing to both mom and dad. Ashley, Doug's neice, is still there but works during the day so Amanda will be there when Ashley is gone. Peg said it best when she said "Now we know why Amanda hasn't been able to find a job, Heavenly Father needed her for something else."

Mom sends her heartfelt thanks for all the well wishes and prayers. We all echo her thanks!

Here We Go....again

Some of you are aware that there has been a set back in dad's/Doug's recovery. Mom/Lynn had to take him back to the ER on Monday afternoon. He was very tired, to the extent of falling asleep while walking to the bathroom, and was giving mom silly answers to questions. At the ER in Boulder they noticed something different in the CT scan compared to last time he was there so they transferred him to Sunrise for further testing. The CT at Sunrise came back normal but they admitted him for observation.

Tuesday morning he kept giggling when mom would ask him questions, didn't know what day it was and didn't remember anything that took place on Monday. Mom also noticed that he had to really concentrate to walk. They performed an MRI and a caraded (sp?) artery ultrasound. Throughout the day he remained the same.

So far Wednesday he has been able to remember that it is 2010 but that is pretty much it. Dr. Hiter, his internest, informed mom that the MRI showed sometype of growth about 1 cm in size on his right frontal lobe. They will biopsy it, do a bone scan and a bunch more tests mom didn't name. This isn't what we wanted to hear but we will press forward and put it in the Lords hands.

Thanksgiving!!!

We had a small crowd of only 17, instead of our usual 40 something, for Thanksgiving this year. It was nice. The girls and I met Peg and her girls at moms around nine. There was stuffing to make, potatoes to peel, games to play and parades to watch!

Trick Or Treat...Smell My Feet!!!

The girls had a Halloween full of parties and trick or treating! Friday morning Priscilla had a fantastic time at her friend Garrett's party. They carved pumpkins, bobbed for apples, played games and of course chowed on some great food made by Garrett's mom Stacy. That evening all the girls were invited to Kaeden and Paeton's for a ghoulish great time. Priscilla ended up not being able to go thanks to throwing up an hour before hand!! (YUCKO!!!!) She climbed in bed with dad, who had been sick since the day before, and woke up the next day feeling fine. Melody and Serenity had a great time at the Carver's. They are good people as my dad would say!!

Saturday brought us great anticipation for trick or treating with Aunt Shannon, Uncle Jim and baby Alex. This was Alex's first Halloween! We stopped and visited Aunt Karole and her friends at the Homestead on our way. That was fun!!! Several of the residents gave the girls candy and our dear friend Edna once again reminded everyone what a horrible mother I am!! She didn't quite get that they were dressed for Halloween!!! Trick or treating was fun and the girls buckets were overflowing. it was a great night for all of us!!!

Tiny Tots Has Begun!!!

And this little cutie pie couldn't be happier!!!

She waited so patiently when her older sisters started school almost three weeks ago. Today was finally her day. She was so excited to see many of her old friends from last year and meet some new ones.

One of her favorite things to do before school is to play in the grass and run around this tree. She also likes to wait by this tree for Tante Renate to get out of exercise class and then she runs to her for some loves.

At the playdoh table, go figure, after she first went into class. She was so excited when she came home to tell me all about her day. She played playdoh with Theron, on the teeter toter with Lilly, and dress up with Josie. And as of this evening Josie is her best friend!!

It's The First Day Of School!!!!

And Mom's all right!!! We had a great start to the new school year. Sunday night Erik gave each of the girls a beautiful blessing and everyone was excited to go to bed so mornign would hurry and get here!! I got up early and fixed German pancakes for breakfast then it was back into the ole routine; brush teeth, wash face and hands, get dressed, wait in line for mom to do their hair. Then it was off to school!!

Priscilla acted like an old pro. I kissed her goodbye and left her in daddy's hands while I went to the other side of the school with Melody. On the walk to her "dot" she jabbered about the "big" playground and how it is so much better because it has monkey bars and swings. She hopscothed for a minute and then was ready to join the throng of dot lookers!!

She found her dot, put her backpack and lunch box down and said she wanted to go play. She took about ten steps and came running back and said maybe later! Mrs. Coe came out and Melly looked at me and said I am fine you can go now!!! I was a little shocked and asked her if she was sure. She confirmed she was fine. So with a hug and a kiss I was sent off!!

The bell still hadn't rung so I went to see P off into her new world.

She was standing in line all smiles watching the other kids. She smiled then waved and with an I love you mom she was off. Part of me was sad but I was mostly proud of my girls. They trust Erik and I when we tell them they will be safe and have a great time and they trust their teachers too. I love picking them up from school. Their faces just beaming when they see you, ready to tell you about their day. It reminds me of when I used to pick up my nieces and how happy they were to see me and share. I LOVE this age when school is wonderfully exciting and so happy that my girls love it too!!

Meet The Teach!

Mel and P had there meet the teacher Friday and it was fun!! During our walk from the parking lot to the school both girls were chatter bugs but as soon as we rounded the corner to Priscilla's class they immediately stopped. That made me chuckle because Priscilla has been talking about kindergarten since her birthday when she turned 5. She was so upset that she had to finish out the year in pre-school!! She wanted to have Mrs. Richman, the same teacher as Melody, so we requested her. I explained to P that just because we request her doesn't mean it will happen. The first week of August the letter arrived telling us who P would have. The whole family gathered around to read the letter, you would have thought it was a mission call!!! As I read the letter saying she would have Mrs. Richman Melody got excited and said "oh my gosh!", I was excited and looked over to P to see her sitting there looking at us like we are nuts. I asked her if she was happy she got Mrs. Richman and she said "I told you when I turned 5 I wanted Mrs. Richman and now that I am 5 I have Mrs. Richman." Alrighty then! Way to use the art of positive thinking there P!!!!

Melly is starting the First Grade!! I can't believe it. She said she is a little nervous but not scared!! She has Mrs. Coe, who we have heard is wonderful so we look forward to a great year. During Mrs. Coe's presentation she asked the students to sit at a desk and listen because she would be talking to them too. Melly looked so cute sitting in her desk. She listened and participated when asked, I was so proud of her!!!

Poppop and Mamoo Make Good On Their Promise!

The girls have been waiting (not so) patiently for bunk beds and finally the moon aligined with Jupiter and walla, bunk beds!!!!

I wish it had been that easy but we all know SO much better. So....we have a small house and the girls are sharing a room. Becky's parents offered to buy the girls bunk beds when we first got them but there was a tiny law that said they had to be 8 yrs old to sleep in them. Yes, I know!!! Three years later we didn't have to worry about that law but we did have to wait for Mamoo and Poppop to return from "Hannah Montana"!!!! It was a VERY LONG wait for Serenity!

(he is probably praying that his wife would quit taking pictures!)

Mamoo came over on Friday to announce the great news...she was taking mommy to get the bunk beds! The girls watched a movie and waited for daddy, mommy and mamoo to assemble the beds.

The girls with Karmann and Ryan. Karmann was Priscilla's Developmental Specialist from about the age of 1 until she turned 3 and aged out of the program. She knew the girls birth mom and all the yuck that the girls have been through. I knew the moment she walked through our door she was somebody special. She first reminded me of my "Tooele" cousins, then we found out she was LDS and told us how she had been praying for these girls to find the right home. We have stayed in touch, even though she has moved to Arizona. We were so happy to share this special day with her and Ryan!!

The girls looked like little angels in their beautiful dresses that Mamoo, Becky's mom, made for them. She took apart Becky's wedding dress to make them extra special!! The girls LOVE their dresses!!

I LOVE this picture, and the story behind it. These four children, there is a little head right above Melody's, are in our ward, one of the girls is in Serenity's class, and the mom, in the green skirt, is Serenity's teacher. My girls LOVE this family. Their parents brought them to the Temple to see the girls and it made the girls feel so loved. Serenity spotted them first and yelled "my friends" and went running over to them. I love the smile on "Miss S's" face it makes me think she was just as happy to see my girls as they were to see them!

Today was Melody's last day of Kindergarten! It is a tradition at the ole elementary school to do a cute little western themed "Promotion Program." Melly had a good school year. There were a few bumps along the way but she over came them like the trooper she is!! We are so proud of her and can't wait to see her grow even more!!

The Graduate

Priscilla's Pre-School had a little graduation ceremony for all the kids that will be going to Kindergarten in the Fall. It was precious. The kids sang a few songs, received diplomas, and even wore caps and gowns!

FINALLY Legal!

It's done, over, finished, kaput!!!! After 3 VERY LONG years all three beautiful girls are ours. Doesn't that sound so sweet...ours!!!! There will be no more court dates, monthly visits by a case worker, and my favorite writing down everytime I give my girls a vitamin, herb, or medicine!!!

It was so nice to be in the court room with everyone smiling, even the judge. The bailiff even gave the girls sheriff stickers!!

Here we are with Brian Potts, our adoption worker and Heather Kemp our lawyer. Don't let Brian's look fool you, he is very nice just a quiet fellow!

Heather just handed me the adoption decree...the most important paper of our lives!!

We were pleasantly surprised that some of our friends came to celebrate the day with us. Peggy Martin, Leslie Leavitt, Carma and Bill Secrest, Katie Colton and her little one Alexis joined in on the court room fun along with some of my family. My sister Peggy, mom and dad have been to every court proceeding with us, we cannot explain what that means to us.

After all the hoopla we had to go celebrate, and how do "Ballards" celebrate? With food of course!! Erik wanted breakfast so it was off to Denny's, that fine family dining place!

After brunch we took the girls here...

Our good friends, the Broadbents, gave me this idea. After they adopted their twins they took them to Build-A-Bear to adopt a bear. I loved the idea! Thanks Carol!!!

I Have Become My Grandmother!

My grandma Arl was addicted to kleenex. Seriously, the woman had a kleenex in her hand 24/7. As children the words we heard from her the most were "blow your nose!" Peg, my cousins Tammy and Chris, and I spent several weeks with her and my Grandpop every summer. And we constantly heard "blow your nose!" I remember as if it were yesterday her in a laughter filled voice calling Grandpop into the bathroom to see that we had used enough kleenex to make a mold from the trash can! She was so proud of us!! One year as a joke my mom bought her a CASE of kleenex. We couldn't wait to see her open it. She LOVED it!!! So it became a tradition, along with VHS tapes but that is a WHOLE other story! At her funeral a few years ago we all placed a fresh kleenex in her grave. We know she loved that!!!

Now to my point...allergy season has been upon us and with it came the sniffling, sneezing, runny noses. With three little ones running around I find myself saying "blow your nose!" alot!! Today it hit me..."I sound just like Arl"!!!! I laughed at myself, got the biggest smile, then shed a few tears...I miss her.

I forgot just how much fun it is to have a loose tooth, how hard it is not to push it back and forth until it bleeds and finally pull it out. I got to relive this today with Melody. A few days ago I noticed her bottom, left, middle tooth was a little crooked and greyish. This morning she showed me that it was loose. Everyone wanted to see...

Priscilla loved moving it back and forth and Melody let her any time he asked. Yes gross but so funny!

Serenity would look but didn't want to touch.

A few hours later Melly couldn't stand it any longer she wanted her tooth out. She had pushed and played with it so much it was now hurting her. I had the great pleasure of pulling it out!!

Visitors, VISITORS!!!!

Many of you know that I didn't birth our children, they were truly gifted to us in so many ways, but that is the story for my book!! He he! When we brought the girls home Melody and Priscilla were receiving therapy services. Due to these services we were blessed with some wonderful therapists, one of which, Karmann, has become a very dear friend. Karmann was Priscilla's therapist for about a year before the girls were removed from their biological home. She knew and worked with their birth mother and has been able to provide a lot of much needed information. We ALL fell in love with Karmann the minute he walked through our front door. She first reminded me of a few of my cousins and as we talked her sweet spirit and heart of gold came shining through. When Priscilla turned three she had to "graduate" from the NEIS program that she was in, which meant Karmann would be leaving us in that role. It was a bittersweet day. Priscilla had grown so much and no longer needed the help so we were happy but that meant we wouldn't be seeing Karmann all the time like we had before. We have stayed in contact even through her move to another state!! Friday afternoon Karmann and her sweet husband Ryan suprised us with a visit!! It was so good to see her and finally meet Ryan. Just like the other times Karmann was here at the house, it jut felt comfy.

This picture is blurry but I love it. Priscilla was a little shy at first, then with a little help from daddy, she went over and climbed in Karmann's lap.

Here is Ryan with Melody. He was so much fun. He played with the girls, letting them climb all over him and even dress him up like a princess!

THANK YOU Ryan and Karmann for taking time out of your weekend away to come see us. It may have been hort but we loved it and look forward to more. I hope your next trip out here is for US!!!! LOVE YOU BUNCHES!!!!!

In Your Easter Bonnet

There is a tradition at Melody's school. All the kindergarten students make an Easter bonnet and parade through the school for all the other students, staff, and parents. Melody wanted Peeps on her bonnet, wonder why.

Here is what we made for the girls teachers, the families that Erik Home Teaches, the fabulous lady I visit teach, and a few friends for Easter.

Here is what I used and how to put it together...
Wide mouth mason jar with lid and ring
scrap fabric cut in a 5x5 square
Curly Ribbon
Peeps
Robin Eggs
Jelly Beans
Easter Colored M&M's
Put the Robin Eggs in the bottom as high as you would like. Put the Peeps in one at a time around the jar. Fill the inside with jelly beans to the top of the peeps ears. Top off with M&M's. Put lid on jar, place fabric square on top of lid and screw on the ring. I tied curly ribbon around the ring so I had something to attach the tag to. Easy and fun and the kids can help pour the candy!!

Today was such a beautiful day. The girls and I went to the nursery to get veggies and flowers for the garden, more on that later, stopped to have a picnic with Aunt Shelley, came home and started working on the garden. Well at least I started, the girls did this...

Hair Cuts!

The girls were do for a little trim so off we went to see our friend Hailey!

This is Serenity's first haircut and we went big!! Serenity was excited and had been asking for bangs for a few months now and I just kept putting it off, bangs aren't much fun for mom!

Priscilla INSISTED we volunteer to bring the shamrock cookies for her Tiny Tot class party. Since Serenity would also be having a party I signed both of them up for the cookies. I have been wanting to try my hand at the fancy royal icing instead of slabbing them with butter cream icing. I think they turned out cute and the kids liked them. I didn't care for the taste, just don't tell P!!!

I know some of you know exactly what movie that song came from!!! ANYWAY....
Ariana had her birthday party at the local bowling alley. I must say I love this old school bowling alley, they have updated to the automatic scoring, thank goodness because I could never figure out how to keep score, but other than that it is just the way it was when I was growing up. The girls and Erik had a great time bowling while I helped the little ones and took pictures. It was a great way to spend the evening.

Now this was hilarious...Serenity being a lovely little 3yr old wanted to do it by herself.
As you can see she starts out with pretty good FORM but not a lot of SPEED.

At this point the speed is DECREASING rapidly

So much so that it STOPS in the middle of the lane.

time and time again with a smile on his face.

Birthday Treats!!

Priscilla wanted to take rice krispy treats with sprinkles to school for her birthday. I didn't know how well regular sprinkles would hold so we improvised using fruity pebbles mixed in with the rice krispies.

It looks sprinkley right?

She had so much fun making her treats...

and patted. She wasn't to sure about putting butter on her hands but after some stuck to her wrist she liked it!
